I recently had a friend request that I do an article on the character of Karna from The Mahabharat. This was a great opportunity, something I could learn and share with you. So some of you may know about the Mahabharat; it’s a story (an old tale that took place long ago). In short, it is a story of the rivalry between the sons of two brothers, Dhritarashtra and Panduraj. It is the longest poem ever written, and in turn, it explores the idea of Dharma or righteousness around the prescription of how you live your life and your goals.. It also relates to chapter one of the Bhagwat Geeta (another ancient story and one of the more sacred shared through time). It speaks to our purpose on this earth, and each character in the story resembles their morals. It focuses on the human condition and how each character can be perceived as good or bad. The story is long, but I will break it down into bite-size bullet points for easy understanding. • The story is of a war, but it translates to fighting your own battles - the inner fight to accomplish your beauty and purpose in life. • Speaks to the story of two brothers, split by caste - one travels in search of a guru to become a warrior, and the other is born into a life of privilege; these two brothers fight to the death, and at the end, the one most in distress of their mother who birthed them. • Speaks to the essence of loyalty and the ability to hold yourself to your word and actions. • Can we and do we often talk about the Conundrums that people face in life? • What is the limit of morals?our generosity makes you think about these questions. • How far does self-development go? • Is it just things created on a platter, or must we build things ourselves? • What do we owe our parents? • When faced with adversity in battle and when these two brothers are against one another, what are the most significant points - loyalty? • Life is complicated - so many unanswered questions and shades of grey. Do you have any thoughts on the Mahabharata?
